I am curious, anyone know the banjo tuning/scale that Riles plays in Stray Dog?

Or any other songs for that matter. I love the sound he creates on the banjo.

Thanks.

I've been revisiting this album this morning. How powerful it is...
I have specific memories of listening to Sand /Silk Rd. Origin into Res Extensa constantly during my summer of 2009. I was having some sort of existential crisis at the time, and the rich & deep tones on this CD really managed to suck me into some sort of beautiful world. Go Zak go...inspiring!

Yeah I love the first solo album as well, very atmospheric. Zak also has two records out under Peace Harbor, the first one is easy to find but the second one, Voices From The Light, is out of print and available for .

Just bumping this for those who might be interested - if you like Grails then definitely check out Zak's album!! The track Sand/Silk Rd Origin = eventual Grails - Silk Rd.

Buy it , or on tour. Some info from Important Records:

Zak Riles is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in the Important band Grails. His creative contributions to the group are immeasurable and can be heard clearly on this self titled debut solo outing. In fact some of the pieces on this solo record have been reinterpreted into Grails favorites. Like his band Grails, Zak Riles solo work is an elaborate mansion built of inspiration but with so much strength and originality that it stands firmly on its own. On these rocky shores come crashing waves of Sandy Bull, Mogolar, Deuter, Popol Vuh and the Ventures while Persian breeze drifts by wafting the melodies of Hossein Alizadeh. Essential listening for followers of Important Records who favor the likes of Grails & James Blackshaw.

1. Pacific Siren
2. Confluence
3. Sand/Silk Rd. Origin
4. Res Extensa
5. Before The Refuge
6. Slack Key
7. Chloe

Listen to some tracks on youtube , then go buy the album!!

I asked Zac if he planned on releasing a new solo record and he said was working on a new record w/ some guys from Louisville (one of the former members of Slint). He said they haven't got a name yet, but from what I heard live in April of this year it is something to look forward too! (I live in Louisville, so I was lucky enough to see their first Louisville show here).
