the oddball record collector scum / listening / enjoyment thread.

semi specific to the downer thread title if you will.

obvious and / or rare musics to be posted here. *(with links if they are OOP? not really my call. but a fun idea.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'll go first with a few obvious ones...

Elliott Smith ~ first three and New Moon

Songs: Ohia ~ Impala and the [cough]onthebeachish[/cough] live one Mi Sei Apparso Come Un Fantasma (top 5 or 10 or something for me)

not quite as well known...

Gary Higgins ~ Red Hash (heard the 6 Organs cover first. very thankful for that version...)

Simon Finn ~ Pass The Distance

Holy Sons ~ Decline Of The West (fantastic - duh)

Go!

Fits perfectly as a score to "urban nights".

Hood - Cold House - kinda has a Winter feel to it and is also great for late night listening sessions.

not only does he make you feel alone, he also makes you feel like you've destroyed the earth too!

this one seems to always draw me into a deep sense of isolation

Image
i don't own this record physically but am constantly finding myself lost within it

Image
often imagine chillin outside her mountainside house listening to her play through the window whilst chargin a doobie and soakin up the view

Image
still hasn't lost that vibe

Fight or Flee Response and Dark Waves of Pollution are stand outs.

rings a bell. i'll have to look around for it...

John McLaughlin? damn... didn't see that coming.

i'm a huge 6 Organs fan. but that album never completely did it for me. i'll give it another spin...

I forgot to mention an obvious one that isn't well known I think. A really, really good album:

Mothlite - The Flax Of Reverie
(Released by Southern Lord in 2008. Mothlite is a band with/started by Daniel O'Sullivan [from Guapo/Sunn O))/Ulver/..]

Here's an album trailer:

More info and a song can be found here.

This must be included in this thread:

Bill Callahan (of Smog) is superb. Saw him perform a couple summers ago in a movie theater in Cambridge. He had this projection screen behind him with all of these colors fading in and out of each other very slowly. His music and stage performance is very honest and melancholic. His backing band...incredibly talented. Minimilastic and droning at times. Certainly good music for the loner. Moving lyrics, usually introspective and metaphoric bringing in themes of nature.
His album Sometime I Wish I Were An Eagle is in my top five of 2010.
